Lon Po Po- TL

Lon Po Po was published in 1989 by Philomel Books in New York. It was written by Ed Young as the Chinese version of Little Red Riding Hood.  Its illustrations, also by Young, received a Caldecott Medal. Here are a few examples of his work:

Lon Po Po is good literature for lower grade levels. It introduces a culture children that age may not be familiar with yet. It includes vocabulary from the Chinese culture that can help broaden their horizons. Children will be introduced to the Chinese name for "grandmother" which is "Po Po" and the popular food, "gingko nuts." It also shows how other cultures value the same things that we do, like family, cleverness, and working together.

Lon Po Po could be an option for teaching standard RL. 2.9. to second graders.
"Compare and contrast two or more versions of the same story by different authors or from different cultures."

To compare Lon Po Po to the original Red- Riding Hood story, I would of course read the original version to the students. (Some may have never heard it.) We would talk about some of the similarities and differences, then the students will be given a Venn Diagram to write down their ideas. An example is below.
